The USBCHA’s final is the most prestigious Border Collie trial in North America. For 12 months handlers compete in sanctioned competitions throughout the US and Canada accumulating points to qualify for an opportunity to compete in the qualifying rounds of the finals.
One hundred and fifty border collies compete during the three days of qualifying trials for a position in the semi finals on the Saturday. Out of the 40 semi finalists, the top 20 border collies then qualify for a place in the finals on the Sunday. The finals course is similar to the British International Course, a double lift and an 800 yard field.
This video looks briefly at the qualifying results and then highlights some of the semi finalists explaining how these teams scored. The major part of the program is made up with the top runs in the final event, the higher the score in the finals, the more time is designated to the run.
The 2000 United States Border Collie Handlers’ Finals (USBCHA) with sponsorship from the American Border Collie Association (ABCA) and Krasco experienced tornadoes, lightning storms and about 6 inches of rain!

The 5 days of sheepdog trialing finish up with the runs of the top 20 Border Collies all vying for a chance at the US Border Collie Handlers’ Association Championship trophy.
Alasdair MacRae and Bill came to this trial as the defending champions but were met with stiff competition. 3 handlers managed to qualify 2 Border Collies each for the final day of competition, Alasdair MacRae with Bill and Link, JoAnn Zoerb with Gidge and Zoe and then Ralph Pulfer with Dan and Tweed. A beautiful course rising up the hillside towards the South.
