Lambing time in your Sheep flock
Lambing time can be an exciting and rewarding part of the shepherds year.
Unfortunately, when things go wrong, it can be a frustrating and disappointing time. The
success of any lambing season depends on the condition score of the ewes at breeding time, maintaining
your sheep flock in good condition throughout the gestation period, and following an increasing
level of nutrition in the last weeks before lambing time. This is all covered in
our Sheep
Management video.
There are other essential decisions that have to be made before this. Selecting a Ram that is suitable
for your type of sheep is also important in determining the size of the lambs that the ewe delivers, and
in turn, the level of difficulty you will encounter at lambing time.
If you're lambing inside, it is important that the environment is both clean and spacious. There are
many problems that can occur that show their ugly head. These are problems such as abortions, twin-lamb
disease, prolapses, mastitis, lack of milk, etc.. In our video
The Basics of
Good Sheep Management, we have tried to cover many of the problems and to help in showing some
of the solutions available.
